What to do next...

Ensure Your Safety
If you are a victim of auto theft or auto break-in, your first priority is to be sure that you are safe. Do not touch anything. Next, stop and think, are you current on your vehicle payment? Could anyone else have borrowed your car?

Call the Police
The sooner you call to report an auto crime the better the chance you will have of recovery.

Once you call 911 you will need to provide information immediately about the crime. This will include such things as: location, timing of the crime, car make and model, and license plate number.

Prepare for Police
As you wait for the police to arrive, you may want to call a friend to be with you and to give you a ride home. Once the police arrive, be ready to answer questions.

      • Put down your cell phone
      • Have all vehicle information ready
      • List the items stolen in or from the car
      • Report the last place you saw the vehicle
      • Note the direction of travel of vehicle if you saw it after being stolen
      • Do not approach your vehicle if you see it after it has been stolen, call the police

Police Investigate
Police will look for fingerprints, DNA, tool marks, methods of entry, items stolen, and identity theft.

Contact Insurance Provider
Collect as much information as you are able for your initial contact with your insurance company.
This would include:

      • All papers relating to the vehicle
      • Information on what keys exist and where they are
      • Names and information of anyone who had access to the vehicle
      • A list of items contained in the vehicle
      • An up-to-date description of the vehicle
      • Details on financing
